Yes — many Washington boaters must carry a Washington State Boater Education Card. It is required to operate a vessel with a 15-horsepower or greater motor if you were born after January 1, 1955 and are at least 12 years old. The card is valid for life.
A Washington State Boater Education Card is required to operate a motorized vessel of 15 horsepower or greater for operators who are 12 or older and were born after January 1, 1955. Boaters born on or before January 1, 1955 are exempt.
Operators of commercial vessels with a valid commercial license and holders of a U.S. Coast Guard marine operator license are exempt. Manually powered boats — such as canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and drift boats — and sail-only boats do not require the card.
Washington accepts boating safety courses approved by NASBLA and the Washington State Parks Recreational Boating Safety Program, including approved online courses. The card is valid for life and is accepted in Canada and many other states.
Recreational boating in Washington is overseen by Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, the authoritative source for current requirements.
