Readiness check — FAQ
- Is this the official boater exam?
- No — this is a free practice diagnostic, not a certification test. It uses the same kind of NASBLA/USCG material you’ll see on the real exam so you can spot gaps, then enroll in an approved course to get the card that counts.
- How is the readiness check scored?
- You answer 10 questions drawn at random from a larger pool covering navigation rules, lights, and distress signals. You get an instant score out of 10, a verdict, and the correct answers with explanations so you can learn what you missed.
- Do I need to take a course if I score well?
- Most states require an approved boater education card to operate legally, and a USCG captain’s license requires a formal course and exam regardless of how much you already know. A high score means the course will be quick — not that you can skip it.
