Do you need a boating license in Vermont?

Vermont requires boater education for younger operators. All motorized boat and personal watercraft operators born after January 1, 1974 must pass a boater safety course and carry a boater education certificate. The certificate is valid for life.

An individual born after January 1, 1974 may not operate a motorboat on the public waters of Vermont without first obtaining a certificate of boating education, and must carry it while operating and show it on an officer’s demand. Any approved boating safety education course provides a minimum of 8 hours of instruction.

Only persons born before January 1, 1974, or U.S. Coast Guard–licensed operators, are exempt. Once issued, the certificate is valid for life and may not be revoked.

What boating courses are accepted in Vermont?
