Anyone 12 to 17 years old may operate a motorboat over 10 horsepower or a personal watercraft only if they have completed an Iowa DNR–approved boater education course, or are accompanied on board by a responsible person at least 18 years old who is experienced in operating the vessel.
A person 12 to 17 years old may operate a motorboat over 10 horsepower or a PWC only after completing an Iowa DNR–approved boater education course, or while accompanied on board by a responsible person at least 18 who is experienced in operating the vessel. Those required to be certified must carry their boater education certificate on board.
Iowa accepts boater education courses approved by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, including approved online courses. After passing, you receive a permanent Iowa boater education card.
