Indiana does not require a separate boater education card for adults — a valid Indiana driver’s license satisfies the operator requirement for anyone 16 or older operating a motorboat or PWC over 10 horsepower. A 15-year-old without a driver’s license must instead complete a DNR-approved boater education course.
A person 16 or older may operate a motorboat or personal watercraft over 10 horsepower with a valid Indiana driver’s license. A 15-year-old without a driver’s license may operate such a vessel only after completing an Indiana DNR–approved boater education course and while carrying an Indiana identification card. No one under 15 may operate a motorboat greater than 10 horsepower or a PWC.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources links boaters to approved online and in-person courses. A NASBLA-approved Indiana boater education certificate is recognized by other states for non-resident reciprocity, even though most Indiana operators 16 and older do not need a separate card.
Recreational boating in Indiana is overseen by Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Division, the authoritative source for current requirements. BoatingClasses.com is an independent directory — not a government or certifying body. Boating laws change, so always confirm current requirements with the official agency before operating a vessel.
