Do you need a boating license in Florida?

Florida does not issue a traditional "boating license," but many boaters must carry a Boating Safety Education Identification Card. Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must pass an approved boating safety course before operating a motorboat of 10 horsepower or more, and carry the card plus a photo ID on board. The card is valid for life.

Under Florida Statute 327.395, any person born on or after January 1, 1988 must complete an approved boater education course and obtain a Boating Safety Education Identification Card to operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater. Operators must carry the card together with a photographic ID.

An operator who would otherwise need the card is exempt if accompanied on board by a person at least 18 years old who holds the required card and is attendant to and responsible for the safe operation of the vessel. The education card does not expire — it is valid for the operator’s lifetime.

What boating courses are accepted in Florida?

Florida accepts boating safety courses approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and NASBLA (the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators), including approved online courses. After you pass, the FWC issues a wallet-sized Boating Safety Education Identification Card.

Who regulates boating in Florida?

Recreational boating in Florida is overseen by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the authoritative source for current requirements. BoatingClasses.com is an independent directory — not a government or certifying body. Boating laws change, so always confirm current requirements with the official agency before operating a vessel.
