Florida doesn't issue a traditional boating license. Instead, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must pass an approved boater safety course and carry a Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card to legally operate a boat of 10 horsepower or more.
Do you need a boating license in Florida?
Florida has no standalone “boating license.” What the law requires is a Boating Safety Education Identification Card, issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). You must have one if you were born on or after January 1, 1988 and you operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more on Florida waters.
The card is the proof that you completed an approved boater safety course. Unlike a driver license it does not expire — once you earn it, it is valid for life. You must carry the card, along with a photo ID, whenever you are operating.
How do you get your Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card?
- Take a boater safety course that is approved by NASBLA and accepted by the FWC. You can complete it fully online or in a classroom.
- Pass the final exam at the end of the course.
- Receive your course completion certificate from the provider.
- Submit the certificate to the FWC to be issued your permanent Boating Safety Education ID Card. You can use the completion certificate together with a photo ID for up to 90 days while your permanent card is processed.
- Carry your card and a photo ID any time you operate a vessel of 10 HP or more.
How much does it cost?
The cost is the price of the course itself, which typically runs from about $20 to $40 for an online course depending on the provider. The FWC Boating Safety Education ID Card is free once you submit your completion certificate. Prices change, so confirm the current fee with your chosen provider before you enroll.
Who is exempt from the requirement?
Several boaters do not need the card. The most common exemptions include anyone born before January 1, 1988, anyone operating a vessel under 10 horsepower, and holders of a U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license. A few other exemptions apply to certain rentals and non-residents. Because the list changes, confirm your situation directly with the FWC.
Which courses are accepted in Florida?
Florida accepts NASBLA-approved courses from its list of approved providers. Several established online providers — including the ones featured in our directory below — offer Florida-specific courses that issue the completion certificate you need to get your card. Always confirm a course is FWC-approved before you pay.
BoatingClasses.com is an independent directory, not a government agency. Boating laws change, so always verify current requirements with the FWC before you operate a vessel in Florida.
